There are lots of opportunities for trans and intersex people to appear on live television or radio. Increasingly, trans and intersex people are getting to talk about other experiences and interests, not just about being trans or intersex, but you never know when it might become part of the discussion. On other occasions, people want it to be the main subject, often because they want to help others who are coping in similar situations. In either case, it’s best to be prepared.
You may have heard people talking about how much harder it is to stay in control when in a ‘live’ situation, especially in front of an audience. It can feel as if you are under a lot of pressure and sometimes people find themselves overwhelmed. Don’t worry. If you are well prepared you’ll find that this is much easier to cope with. The trick to doing well is simply to stay calm and stick to your plan.
Whatever you plan to talk about, it’s important to remember that it’s your message you’re there to get across, not somebody else’s. If you are asked a difficult question that seems to twist your words, ignore it and simply talk about what you want to talk about. Don’t worry about being rude. It’s more important to be truthful and to avoid being exploited.
