How Anti-Trans Media Undermines Human Rights and Equality for Everyone

On Tuesday 3rd November we launched a set of resources – a timeline and report – entitled “How Anti-Trans Media Undermines Human Rights and Equality for Everyone”.

The timeline reveals the long history behind the current anti-trans moral panic. It traces how the press has advanced an anti-rights agenda as LGBTQ people have gained equal rights and journalistic standards have declined.

The report further argues, with supporting evidence, that the press has used anti-trans stories not just as a political tool to undermine European equality and human rights frameworks. It also establishes a base from which they oppose lesbian and gay rights, migration and asylum rights, gender equality protections, and to criticise Islam.

We need to recognise anti-trans media as part of a wider reactionary agenda. in particular, to withdraw the UK from the European Convention on Human Rights. Anti-trans media stories affect everyone, and the time for action is now.

The report and timeline were written by Dr Charlotte Galpin and Dr Ash Stokoe of the University of Birmingham, with the support of Trans Media Watch. Dr Galpin is also a trustee of Trans Media Watch.

The report and timeline are available on the University of Birmingham main site.
